1️⃣ What is the Atmosphere?
The atmosphere is the blanket of air surrounding the Earth, held in place by gravity. It is a mixture of gases vital for the survival of all living beings.
- Shields us from harmful solar radiation, including UV radiation.
- Regulates Earth’s temperature by trapping some of the Sun’s energy (prevents it escaping into space).
- Key component of Earth’s weather & climate systems — influences temperature, humidity & air pressure.
2️⃣ Composition of the Atmosphere
Nitrogen & Oxygen are the two primary, most abundant gases essential to life. Other gases (CO₂, argon, helium, neon, krypton, xenon, ozone, hydrogen) are present in much smaller quantities.
- Atmosphere also has water vapour (0.1%–0.4%, varies) & tiny dust particles.
- Water vapour plays a key role in cloud formation & precipitation.
- Composition also varies with altitude.
3️⃣ Structure / Layers of the Atmosphere
Atmospheric layers are defined by changes in temperature & density with increasing altitude. Density is highest near Earth’s surface, decreasing with altitude.

6️⃣ Wind, Pressure & Local Breezes
- Atmospheric pressure = weight of air on Earth’s surface. Highest at sea level, decreases with altitude.
- High temperature → air rises → low pressure → cloudy/wet weather.
- Low temperature → air sinks → high pressure → clear/sunny weather.
- Wind = movement of air from high-pressure to low-pressure areas. Direction influenced by Earth’s rotation.
- Winds are named after the direction they blow from (e.g. a “westerly” blows from the west).

🌬️ Local Winds: Land & Sea Breeze
☀️ Sea Breeze (Day)
Land warmer than sea → low pressure over land → wind blows sea → land, especially in the afternoon.
🌙 Land Breeze (Night)
Sea warmer than land (land cools faster) → wind blows land → sea. Lower temperature difference → lower wind speed.
7️⃣ Seasons in India (as per IMD)
India’s climate is broadly classified as Tropical Monsoon. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recognises 4 seasons:

8️⃣ Traditional Indian Seasons (Ṛtu)
Traditionally, India experiences 6 seasons, each ~2 months long, based on the astronomical division of 12 months into 6 parts:

9️⃣ Monsoon

- Ancient sailors were among the first to notice the monsoon phenomenon & used it for sailing.
- Kālidāsa’s Meghadūtam (~5th century CE) mentions the onset date of monsoon over central India & traces the path of monsoon clouds.
- Most of India’s agriculture depends on monsoon rainfall — good monsoon → sufficient food & water; excessive rain → floods; weak monsoon → droughts.
🔟 Climate Change & Carbon Footprint
Climate change = long-term changes in weather patterns (temperature, rainfall, wind), caused mainly by human activities:
- Burning of fossil fuels
- Deforestation
- Industrial pollution releasing greenhouse gases (CO₂, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapour)
Ways to reduce carbon footprint: walk/cycle or use public transport, switch off unused appliances, use water judiciously, reuse/recycle & avoid single-use plastics, use renewable energy, protect forests, adopt sustainable lifestyles.

In 2025, Punjab experienced severe floods due to heavy monsoon rains & consecutive swelling of the rivers Satluj, Beas & Ravi. Damaged villages, farmland, houses & infrastructure (roads, bridges).
