उत्तर: जब सिद्धार्थ अपने मन की बेचैनी दूर करने के लिए वन भ्रमण के लिए जा रहे थे तो उन्हें ताजे जुते हुए खेतों में दिखा कि कई पादप और जंतुओं की मृत्यु हो गई थी। इससे सिद्धार्थ का मन और भी अशांत हो गया। फिर जब वे एक जगह ध्यानमग्न थे तो उन्हें एक भिक्षुक दिखाई दिया। उस भिक्षुक ने यह बताया कि किस तरह वह माया-मोह से मुक्त होकर धर्म के मार्ग पर चल रहा था। भिक्षुक की बातों को सुनकर सिद्धार्थ को निर्वाण के विषय में पहली प्रेरणा मिली।
