The earliest civilisation of the Indian Subcontinent is known by several names — the Indus, Harappan, Indus-Sarasvatī or Sindhu-Sarasvatī civilisation.   • Only a surplus of food (more than farmers need for themselves) can free some people from farming so they can become rulers, administrators, craftspeople, traders or scribes.

Why has the chapter avoided the term “Indus Valley civilisation”? What does the map explain about this?

The name “Indus Valley civilisation” was coined when only Harappa and Mohenjo-daro — both located directly in the Indus plains — had been discovered, around a century ago. But the map (Fig. 6.3 above) shows sites spread far beyond the Indus: Rakhigarhi and Farmana in Haryana, Kalibangan in Rajasthan, and Dholavira, Lothal and Bagasra in Gujarat, all lie along the Sarasvatī basin or the Gujarat coast, well outside the Indus valley itself.

Since the civilisation clearly extended across a much larger area than just one river’s valley, the word “Valley” is now considered too narrow and outdated (obsolete). Archaeologists prefer the broader names Indus-Sarasvatī or Sindhu-Sarasvatī civilisation, which acknowledge both major river systems that supported it.

This level of coordination could only have been directed by some form of central authority or administration — planners, supervisors and skilled masons working under instruction.
  • Payment without money: Since coined money did not yet exist, workers were most likely paid “in kind” — with grain, food, cloth, or other daily necessities from a central store, similar to how later ancient civilisations (like Egypt or Mesopotamia) are known to have compensated large labour forces.
  • Maintenance and local authority: Reservoirs need periodic desilting and cleaning to stay usable, especially after the monsoon. Regular upkeep across six large reservoirs points to an ongoing municipal or civic authority responsible for maintenance — not a one-time project abandoned after construction.
  • What this tells us about Dholavira’s rulers: Together, these clues suggest Dholavira had an organised, functioning administration capable of long-term planning, resource mobilisation and public works management — much like a municipal body today, even though we do not know its exact political form (chief, council, or something else).
This is an open “Think About It” box — archaeologists themselves are still debating the exact nature of Harappan governance, since no royal names, palaces or inscriptions describing rulers have been found. Use your imagination, but ground it in the evidence above.

Other possible interpretations a class might suggest: a community gathering or purification space used before entering a nearby important building; a facility linked to trade or craft activity (e.g. dyeing/washing cloth or cleaning traded goods); or a status symbol built simply to demonstrate the city’s engineering skill and the community’s ability to manage water.

As the textbook itself notes, we have no inscriptions, texts or traveller’s accounts from the Harappans — so every interpretation here is an educated guess based on the structure’s design and comparisons with later customs, not a proven fact.

The scene shows a thirsty crow standing beside a tall, narrow-necked pot, with a deer and trees nearby. The story it seems to illustrate is remarkably close to the well-known fable of “The Thirsty Crow”: a crow finds a pot with water too low for its beak to reach, so it cleverly drops pebbles into the pot one by one until the water rises high enough to drink. This is a story about intelligence overcoming a physical limitation.

How could it survive 4,000+ years? Simple animal fables with a clear moral (cleverness solves problems) are short, memorable and easy to retell to children. Such stories most likely survived through an oral tradition — parents and elders telling it to children generation after generation — long before it was ever written down. Since the story still exists today in Panchatantra-style fables told across India, it shows how oral culture, and not only writing, can preserve knowledge across millennia.

The ‘Dancing Girl’ figurine

The figurine stands in a confident, relaxed pose — one hand on the hip, one leg slightly forward — which feels natural, informal and full of self-assured personality, unlike a stiff ceremonial or religious posture. This suggests the Harappans valued individual expression and skilled, realistic bronze-casting (using the lost-wax technique).

Her bangles cover almost her entire arm — a style of wearing many bangles together that is still seen today in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, the very regions where major Harappan sites like Dholavira and Lothal are located. The same full-arm bangle style can also be spotted on the terracotta beads/ornament references elsewhere in the chapter (see the carnelian bead strings in Fig. 6.10, which were strung as bracelets and necklaces).

Conclusion: This continuity across more than 4,000 years shows that some cultural practices — like styles of jewellery — can survive for millennia in the same region, long after the civilisation that originated them has disappeared, quietly linking present-day Gujarat and Rajasthan to their Harappan past.

Why did the Harappans return to rural settlements after their cities were abandoned?

A rural lifestyle gives more direct and reliable access to food and water than an urban one. Cities cannot grow their own food — then, as now, they depended entirely on surrounding villages to supply grain and water on a daily basis. Once climate change reduced rainfall and the Sarasvatī River dried up in its central basin, that daily supply chain broke down: cities could no longer be fed or watered reliably.

Faced with this, the Harappans had little choice but to disperse into hundreds, if not thousands, of small rural settlements, where a family could farm or herd just enough for its own survival without depending on a large, complex urban administration or long supply routes. This is also why the old government/administration system appears to have disappeared along with the cities — a large, structured urban government is only needed to manage a large, structured urban population.
