The Beggar Summary in English

Advocate Sergei was detained by a beggar one day. The beggar was crying for pity and told him he had been a school teacher but had lost his position.

The beggar was in rags. He had dull, sunken cheeks and red spots on either cheek. He wore one high shoe and one low shoe.

Sergei recognised the beggar and told him he had met him in Sadovya Street. Then he had called himself a student. Sergei warned that he would inform the police.

The beggar admitted the truth and asked for work. Sergei asked him to chop wood. The beggar agreed, though unwillingly. The beggar was taken by Sergei’s servant Olga to the shed where he had to chop the wood.

Olga gave the beggar the axe. Sergei seeing a drunken and a spoiled man at work in the cold, felt sorry for him and went away.

The beggar would cut wood on the first of every month. He would also shovel snow, beat the dust out of the rugs and mattresses and put the wood-shed in order. When Sergei moved into another house, the beggar packed and carried the furniture.

Lushkoff, the beggar was now offered other work. Sergei asked him to go to his friends. They gave him some copying work as he could write. Sergei was happy he had put the man on the right track.

Two years went by. One evening standing at a ticket window of a theatre Sergei saw the man again. Lushkoff told him that he was a notary and was paid thirty-five roubles a month. He thanked Sergei for what he had done for him. He said that if he had not helped him he would still have been telling lies.

He asked Sergei to thank Olga, the cook. Lushkoff told Sergei that Olga would rebuke, call him names then she would sit opposite him and weep. Then she would chop the wood for him. Due to Olga’s actions, he had a change of heart. He was set right by Olga and would never forget her.

एंटोन चेखव की कहानी ‘The Begger’ एक भिखारी की मानसिकता के परिवर्तन के बारे में है। कहानी एक भिखारी के साथ शुरू होती है जिसका नाम लुश्कोफ़ था और वह एक दयालु आदमी सर्गेई से पैसे मांग रहा था। वह पिछले तीन दिनों से  भूखा होने का नाटक कर रहा था। वह खुद को एक स्कूल शिक्षक के रूप में भी दिखा रहा था, जिसने एक साजिश में अपनी नौकरी खो दी। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि उनके पास एक नई नौकरी थी लेकिन उन्हें उस जगह तक पहुंचने के लिए पैसे की जरूरत थी जहां उन्हें अपनी नई नौकरी में शामिल होना था। सर्गेई उसकी ओर देख रहा था और आखिरकार उसने देखा कि उस भिखारी के पास एक ऊँचा और दूसरा कम ऊँचा जूते हैं और फिर उसने पहचान लिया कि वही भिखारी कुछ दिन पहले ही भिक्षा माँग रहा था जो स्कूल से निकाले जाने का नाटक कर रहा था। भिखारी ने सब कुछ मानने से इनकार कर दिया लेकिन जब गुस्से में, सर्गेई ने उसे पुलिस में ले जाने की धमकी दी, तो उसने स्वीकार किया कि वह झूठ बोल रहा था।

फिर, सर्गेई ने उससे पूछा कि क्या वह उसके घर में नौकरी करेगा। जब भिखारी सहमत हो गया, सर्गेई उसे लकड़ी चॉपर के रूप में काम करने के लिए अपने घर ले गया। जब वे उसके घर पहुँचे, तो उस घर की महिला रसोइया जिसका नाम ओल्गा था, पहले तो क्रोधित हुई लेकिन सर्गेई के निर्देशों के अनुसार, भिखारी को लकड़ी काटने के लिए ले गई। रसोइया ने भिखारी को डांटना शुरू कर दिया, लेकिन उसने लकड़ी काट ली और आधा रूबल कमाया। उस दिन से, भिखारी महीने के पहले या कभी-कभी या तो अक्सर उसके घर जाता था और या तो लकड़ी काटने का काम करता था या फिर पैकिंग में सर्गेई की मदद करता था, फर्नीचर की व्यवस्था करता था और अन्य घरेलू काम करता था। उसने वहाँ से पैसा कमाया। एक दिन, सर्गेई ने उसे एक पत्र दिया और उससे कहा कि वह पत्र उसके एक मित्र के पास ले जाए जहाँ उसे लिखने की नौकरी की पेशकश की जाएगी।

सर्गेई ने उन्हें कड़ी मेहनत करने और शराब न पीने का सुझाव दिया। उस दिन से सर्गेई लंबे समय तक लुश्कोफ से नहीं मिले और जब, लगभग दो वर्षों के बाद, सर्गेई भिखारी से मिले, उन्होंने पाया कि भिखारी नोटरी बन गया था और अब वह अच्छी रकम कमा रहा था। भिखारी ने उससे कहा कि वो ही  अकेला था जिसने उसके जीवन को नरक से स्वर्ग में बदल दिया, लेकिन लुश्कोफ ने सर्गेई को एक और रहस्य भी बताया कि वास्तविक में, उसका रसोइया ओल्गा, हालांकि उसे डांटता था और उसे गाली देता था, लेकिन  वह ही थी जो उसका इस्तेमाल करती थी उसके लिए हर बार लकड़ी काटने का काम करो और उसके इस तरह के व्यवहार के कारण ही उसने आगे भी कड़ी मेहनत करने की प्रतिबद्धता जताई।

The Accidental Tourist Summary in English

The Accidental Tourist by Bill Bryson is a short story that highlights the importance of having suave and elegant manners at the time of travelling. In this story, we see that the narrator almost flies over 100,000 miles every year because of his job’s nature. So, we can say that the narrator is an accidental tourist, though he doesn’t enjoy travelling but still he has to because of his job. However in his own words he says that he is sort of a confused man who often forgets the roads and gets into wrong alleys or gets trapped into self-locking doors. In this story, he takes us to some of his awry travel experiences where he did some crazy things, though unwittingly.

Most of his experiences are based around airports or inside the flights. On one instant, while flying to England from Boston with family for Christmas, he forcibly opened the zip of his bag, as a result it broke down and all the stuff littered on the ground. This made him embarrassed and the people around him.
One day in the flight, he got up to tie his shoelace, but then suddenly the person on the next seat pulled up the full recliner, he got crushed into his seat and with great difficulty he managed to get himself freed. This indicates that he was absentminded when tying shoelace.
On other day, he repeatedly spilled drink on a lady’s lap sitting beside him. Because of this habit, one day his wife let herself opened the lid of the food container. In another funny instance the narrator was busy noting something with a pen, but at the same time he was sucking the one side of his pen and speaking to a young lady. When he visited the lavatory, he found blue stains on his chin, color, hands and so on. There are some instances when the narrator, owing to his poor memory, forgot some or other thing and landed himself up in trouble.
The message from this story is that travelling is not everyone’s cup of tea. One needs to be alert and graciously presentable to avoid getting into blunders or causing inconvenience to others. You need to have good manners and immaculate presence of mind while travelling to far-off distance. Imagine what will you do if you lost your documents and money and gadgets?

The chapter, ” A House is not a Home” by Zan Gaudioso is all about the challenges one has to face when he or she converts into a teenager. The author, during his childhood, gets admission in high school and remembers his experiences, friends, teachers and all his activities in the previous school. One afternoon on Sunday, the author was doing his homework and his mother was stoking the fire in the fireplace. As usual his red tabby cat was lying on the top of the papers and was engaged in disturbing him. Suddenly he smelled something strange and found that there was fire In the house.

He and his mother ran out of the house and called the fire department. But his mother ran  back to the house twice to collect some important documents and other things. The firefighters started their work and somehow brought his mother out. The house was destroyed and the author noticed that his cat was also not there. He broke down into years and was missing his cat a lot. He also had lost all his school materials and went to his grandparents’ house.

In his school, the teachers as well as the students knew very well about his situation. They all collected the amount mutually and bought for him all the stuff like books, copies, different dresses and all other required things.

For his surprise, they all at first forcefully sent him to the gym where he found all the things as a surprise. It was a very emotional situation for him and suddenly he had many friends. After one month he was watching, his house was starting to rebuild, but he was missing his cat so much and imagined that his cat might have been burnt in the fire. But this time he was not alone but some new friends were with him to support. Suddenly a lady came to him with his cat and he became very happy watching his own cat. He understood that in the fear of fire, his cat had run from the house to save it’s own life but now somehow has returned back.

The Last Leaf Summary In English

Story Last Leaf by O Henry is a beautiful story depicting the virtue of human sacrifice and love. This story is about Sue, Johnsy, and Mr. Behrman; Sue and Johnsy live in an apartment in Greenwich Village, a favorite place for aspiring painters to live at. Sue and Johnsy had met at a restaurant and became soul-mate friends.

In the winter pneumonia epidemic affected many people in that area; Johnsy also fell prey to it. Her condition became worse from bad with each passing day. The doctor confided to Sue one day that Johnsy was losing hope and desire to get well under the painful influence of the disease. She began to harbor a belief that she would die the moment the last leaf fell from the ivy climber on the wall opposite her window. She also shares her belief with her friend, Sue.  

Sue discussed it with Mr. Behrman, an extremely talented painter living in obscurity in their neighborhood. Mr. Behrman decided to save Johnsy’s life. He believed in the power of believing. One night when it was extremely cold and raining, he painted a leaf on the ivy climber in such a manner that it looked like a real leaf.  When Johnsy saw that the last leaf on the ivy climber on the opposite wall had not fallen, she was somehow filled with the desire to heal and get well. This desire helped her recuperate fast. And she recovered.

However, Mr. Behrman who had worked in the cold, was affected by pneumonia and died. Thus he laid his life to save Johnsy’s life.

Weathering The Storm in Ersama Summary In English

The chapter “Weathering the storm in Ersama” by Harsh Mander is all about a cyclone that hit Orissa in October 1999 and killed thousands of people and destroyed hundreds of villages. One 19 years old boy Prashant, who used to live in a small village named kalikuda, had gone to a small town in coastal Orissa almost 18 kilometres from his village.

He had gone to his friend’s house  but suddenly in the evening, a dark and menacing storm started quickly and very soon converted into velocity of 350 km per hour. Many of the trees got uprooted and two among them fell on the roof of the house of Prashant’s friend. By the night, it rained as heavier as the water filled the ground up to almost the roof. They all had to spend a full night above the roof and could keep themselves alive by eating the coconuts whose trees had fallen on the roof.

After two days, Prashant decided to return back to his village so as to know about the condition of his village as well as aboutball the family members of his house. He started his journey of 18 kilometres, but on the way, he observed lots of destruction and saw dead bodies of animals and human beings as well. After a long time, he finally reached  his village but began to cry by watching all the 96 houses of the village had been destroyed. He went to the shelter camp and met his grandmother and then all his family members. He noticed that the condition of the people there was so miserable.

Prashant organised some of the sports competitions for the children so that they would be entertained. He, with some other people, arranged the grains for the hungry people by collecting from the houses of the rich. The government couldn’t establish any institution for the orphans and for the widows for almost six months after the storm. Prashant didn’t have the time to become sad for himself but instead he made himself engaged in helping others continuously.

The bird becomes friendly with the prince and tries to make him happy by assisting him in his desire to ease the suffering of others. It plucks out the ruby, the sapphire and other fine jewels from the statue and delivers them to those who are poor and needy.

The Happy Prince was a beautiful statue. One day a little swallow stayed between the feet of the Happy Prince. A large drop of water fell on the swallow when he got ready to go to sleep. The swallow learnt that these were the tears falling from the Happy Prince’s eyes. The Happy Prince told him about the misery around him. The swallow made up his mind to stay there.
The Happy Prince gave a ruby for a poor seamstress. He gave a sapphire for a playwright and another sapphire for a match girl. The swallow carried out the prince’s wishes. He also plucked out the gold leaves from the statue and gave it to the poor. He decided to go to Egypt as desired by the Happy Prince. The bird said that he was leaving for the House of Death. And he fell down dead at the Prince’s feet. Just then Prince’s leaden heart cracked into two parts because of hard frost. The next morning, the Mayor ordered it to be taken down and melted in a furnace. The broken lead heart, however, did not melt. So it was thrown on a heap of dust. The dead bird was also lying there. In Heaven, God asked one of the Angels, to bring him two most precious things from the city. The Angel carried away the broken heart and the dead bird.
