The Sound of Music Summary

The Sound of Music summary is a great way for students in Class 9 to learn about the chapter in short. This chapter is about two music maestros and their lives. We will learn about multi-percussionist, Evelyn Glennie and Bismillah Khan, the shehnai player. 

Deborah Cowley in her biographical feature Evelyn Glennie Listens to Sound without Hearing It writes about the achievements of the multi-percussionist, Evelyn Glennie who overcame her handicap of hearing impairment with great determination and confidence.

The feature describes how, under the able guidance of Ron Forbes, Evelyn Glennie found a way out of her problem by developing an ability to sense music through different parts of her body. Part II is an effort to understand Indian classical musicians and instruments especially the origin of shehnai and shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan. Shehnai replaced pungi which had an unpleasant sound. Pungi’s tonal quality was improved by a nai (barber) and was played in the chambers of the shah (emperor Aumangeb); hence it was named as shehnai.

The Sound of Music summary recaps the whole chapter in a simpler and easier form. In this chapter, students will learn about the interesting lives of the two musical legends. One part is about the Scottish musician, Evelyn and the other is about Indian legend, Bismillah Khan. Further, this chapter chooses these two musicians because of their interesting lives. It will help students gain insight into their struggles and hard work. You will learn how hard work and determination can serve us well. It stays true to its name and gives inside stories and facts behind the glitz and glamour of these musicians.

The Sound of Music divides into two parts. Each part focuses on two musicians, Evelyn Glennie and Bismillah Khan. Part one throws light on Evelyn’s life and struggles to become a successful musician. Students will learn that she is a multi-percussionist. She has the talent to play hundreds of instruments perfectly. It tells how she gained international recognition.

What’s interesting is the Evelyn is profoundly deaf. The musician learned to listen to music through her body and not ears. She does not hear music, she feels it. You will learn that was 11 years old when she found out she had trouble hearing. Nonetheless, that did not stop her from pursuing her career in music.

Thus, her teacher, Ron Forbes was the one to recognize her talent. He unlocked doors to her potential and helped her achieve the impossible. She is now one of the most renowned names in the music industry. She has many accolades and awards to her name and serves as a great inspiration to the specially-abled community.

Next comes part II, where we learn about Bismillah Khan as well as the origin of shehnai. It was Bismillah Khan who popularized this instrument and took it to the world stage. He broke the myth of shehnai not being capable to create independent tunes. He came from a family of musicians.

Further, Bismillah Khan had a very secular upbringing. He grew up practising on the banks of River Ganga. He went to the mosque as well as the temple. After achieving immense success, he was awarded various titles. He is also a recipient of the highest civilian award of India- The Bharat Ratna.

In addition to that, he has won all three awards of Padma Bhushan, Padmashree and Padma Vibhushan. Interestingly, he was the first person to be invited to play shehnai at the Red Fort in 1947, while greeting Independent India.

Most importantly, he represented India on the international stage as well. An auditorium in Tehran is also by his name. Moreover, despite many opportunities, Bismillah Khan never left his home-town Varanasi. He dedicated his life to music and passed away in 2006.

She is taught by a mechanical teacher at her home. She hates school and her mechanical teacher. She is willing to know about old day’s schools and their teachers from Tommy.
Tommy: Tommy is about 13 year old who is Margie’s friend finds a book in his house. He brings it to Margie and tells her about old schools. He knows all about old schools and their teachers.
Mechanical Teacher: A robot that has black and ugly look. All the lessons are shown and the questions are asked on its big screen. It has a slot in which Margie has to put her homework in punching code.
County Inspector: A round little man with red face has a box of tools, dials and wires. He comes to set Margie’s television where the geography sector was gearing too little quickly.

The Fun They Had Summary

The story begins with two children named, Margie and Tommy. It takes place in the world of the future where computers dominate everything. Moreover, it also shows how the concept of schools and classrooms has transformed completely.

It’s the year 2157, and Margie is writing in her diary about how Tommy found a book. This book was of Tommy’s grandfather when he was a little kid. Margie learns about how they use to print all the stories on paper back then.

Further, they read the book themselves and find the feeling of turning pages over rather funny. It was funny because they were not in the habit of reading still words, only ones in motion that too on a screen. We learn that in the future, there are no books, only telebooks. They store them in TV sets and computers.

After that, it takes an interesting turn when they discuss school. Margie learns that schools were very different back then. They had actual persons who were teachers. It is surprising because she has only robots which teach her.

Moreover, she does not like school because of a lot of reasons. The school she studies does not have any classmates. In fact, it doesn’t even have recess or playground.

Margie and Tommy study in a virtual classroom. They have robots as teachers. Most importantly, her ‘school’ is next to her bedroom only. It is a room full of electronics, robots, and gadgets. The computer software teaches her everything.

When Margie attends her school after learning about the earlier ones, she starts wondering. When she starts studying, she cannot help but think about the earlier days.

Margie wonders about the fun her grandparents would indulge in. She imagined kids from different neighbourhoods coming together merrily to attend school.

Moreover, the fact that they were taught the same thing amused her. It was because everyone would help each other out with the homework. Thus, in the end, she is left wondering about the fun they had.

Construction of a Tangents from an External Point to a Circle when its Centre is Known

Steps of Construction:

  • Draw a circle with centre O.
  • Join the centre O to the given external point P.
  • Draw a right bisector of OP to intersect OP at Q.
  • Taking Q as the centre and OQ = PQ as radius, draw a circle to intersect the given circle at T and T’.
  • Join PT and PT’ to get the required tangents as PT and PT’.

Steps of Construction:

  • Construct a triangle ABC by using the given data.
  • Make an acute angle ∠BAX, below the base AB.

Construction of a Triangle Similar to a given Triangle as per given Scale Factor mn , m > n.

Let ΔABC be the given triangle and we want to construct a ΔAB’C’, such that each of its sides is mn (m > n) of the corresponding side of ΔABC.

Steps of Construction:

  • Construct a ΔABC by using the given data.
  • Make an acute angle ∠BAX, below the base AB. Extend AB to AY and AC to AZ.
