मायाजाल से सोने का हिरण बने मारीच को मारने के बाद राम संदेह से भरे कुटिया की ओर भागे चले जा रहे थे कि कहीं लक्ष्मण सीता को कुटिया में अकेला छोड़कर न आ जाए। उन्हें पगडंडी से लक्ष्मण आते दिखे| वे लक्ष्मण से गुस्सा थे। लक्ष्मण ने उन्हें कहा कि मुझे पता था कि आप सकुशल होंगे परंतु देवी सीता के कटु वचन और उलाहना सुनकर मुझे कुटिया छोड़कर आना पड़ा है। राम को लक्ष्मण का उनकी आज्ञा का उल्लंघन करना उचित नहीं लगा|

दोनों जल्दी कुटिया की ओर चल पड़े| जब कुटिया दिखाई पड़ने लगी तो राम ने सीता को पुकारा कि वह कहाँ है? आवाज़ नहीं आई| सीता कुटिया में नहीं थीं| राम ने सीता को हर सम्भव स्थान पर ढूंढा और पूछताछ की| लक्ष्मण राम के निकट गए और बोले कि आप आदर्श पुरुष हैं। आप को धैर्य रखना चाहिए। तब राम शांत हुए। ;इसी बीच हिरणों का झुंड राम-लक्ष्मण के निकट आ गया। राम ने हिरणों से सीता के बारे में पूछा। हिरणों ने सिर उठाकर आसमान की ओर देखा और दक्षिण की ओर भाग गये। राम ने इसे संकेत मान सीता की खोज में दक्षिण की ओर बढ़े|

दक्षिण दिशा में आगे बढ़ने पर उन्हें गिद्धराज जटायु घायल हालत में मिले और अपनी अंतिम साँसें ले रहे थे| उन्होंने राम को बताया कि रावण सीता को उठा कर दक्षिण-पश्चिम दिशा की ओर ले गया है। उन्होंने संघर्ष करके उसे रोकना चाहा परंतु रोक न सके। इतना कहकर जटायु ने अपने प्राण त्याग दिए। राम जटायु का अन्तिम संस्कार कर आगे बढ़े तब उन्हें कबंध राक्षस मिला। उसके द्वारा आक्रमण करने पर राम-लक्ष्मण ने तलवार का वार करके उसके हाथ काट दिए। तब उसने राम-लक्ष्मण के बारे में जानकर अपनी इच्छा प्रकट की कि राम उसका अन्तिम संस्कार करें। कबंध ने उन्हें बताया कि ऋष्यमूक पर्वत पर वानरराज सुग्रीव रहता है। वह वहाँ निर्वासित जीवन व्यतीत कर रहा है। उसने यह भी बताया कि सुग्रीव के पास वानरों की सेना है। वे अवश्य सीता को खोज निकालेंगे। उसने उन्हें वहाँ जाने से पहले मतंग ऋषि के आश्रम में रहने वाली शबरी से मिलने के लिए भी कहा। उसने प्राण त्याग दिया और राम ने वचनुसार उसका अंतिम संस्कार खुद किया| वहाँ से वे दोनों शबरी से जाकर मिले। शबरी ने भी उन्हें सुग्रीव की सहायता से सीता की खोज करने के लिए कहा। शबरी से मिलकर वे ऋष्यमूक पर्वत की ओर चल पड़े।

सोने का हिरण राम को कुटिया से बहुत दूर ले आया। राम ने उसे जीवित पकड़ने का विचार छोड़कर उसे बाण से मार दिया। राम ने उसका पीछा करते हुए उस पर निशाना साधा। बाण लगते ही वह अपने असली रूप में आ गया और चिल्लाकर बोला—”हा सीते! हा लक्ष्मण!” और वह थोड़ी देर में मर गया। राम को समझते देर न लगी कि क्यों हिरण उन्हें जानबूझ कर कुटिया से दूर ले आया था। वे तेज कदमों से कुटिया की ओर चल दिए।

रावण अपनी चाल की सफलता पर प्रसन्न था कि वह अब सीता का हरण कर सकेगा और सीता हरण के साथ ही राम निशक्त हो जाएँगे। सीता और लक्ष्मण ने मायावी हिरण की पुकार सुन ली थी। लक्ष्मण समझ गए कि यह कोई चाल है परंतु सीता घबरा गई और उसने लक्ष्मण को भाई की सहायता के लिए जाने के लिए कहा। लक्ष्मण ने सीता को समझाना चाहा कि यह राक्षसों की चाल है| परन्तु सीता लक्ष्मण को बुरा-भला कहने लगीं। लक्ष्मण सीता की इन बातों को सिर झुका कर सुनते रहें। सीता का क्रोध और बढ़ गया तथा वह अपने प्राण देने के लिए तैयार हो गई। तव लक्ष्मण राम की आज्ञा का उल्लंघन कर सीता को प्रणाम कर राम की खोज में चल पड़े। 

लक्ष्मण के जाते ही रावण साधु का वेश रखकर आ पहुँचा। उसने छल-कपट से सीता का हरण कर लिया। सीता स्वयं को असहाय पाकर विलाप करने लगी। रावण का रथ लंका की ओर बढ़ चला। मार्ग में वे पशुओं, पक्षियों, पर्वतों को कहती जा रही थीं कि कोई राम को बता दे कि रावण ने उनका हरण कर लिया है । जटायु ने सीता का विलाप सुनकर रथ को क्षत-विक्षत कर दिया व रावण को घायल भी कर दिया। क्रोध में रावण ने जटायु के पंख काट दिए। सीता ने अपने आभूषण उतारकर फेंकना प्रारम्भ कर दिया ताकि उनके मार्ग का पता चल सके| 

रावण सीता को सीधे अपने महल में ले गया। सीता को राक्षसियों की निगरानी में छोड़कर उसने कहा कि मैं तुम्हें एक वर्ष का समय देता हूँ। निर्णय कर लो कि मेरी रानी बनोगी या सारा जीवन रोती रहोगी। सीता राम का गुणगान करती रही। राम की प्रशंसा सुनकर तथा खर-दूषण की मृत्यु को स्मरण कर रावण को लगा कि राम अवश्य ही शक्तिशाली होगा। राम की गतिविधियों पर नजर रखने के लिए उसने अपने आठ बलिष्ठ राक्षसों को पंचवटी भेज दिया। रावण ने सीता को अशोकवाटिका में बंदी बना लिया। सीता बार-बार राम का नाम लेकर डरी-सहमी रो-रो कर दिन काट रही थीं।

भरत के अयोध्या लौटने के बाद राम ने चित्रकूट के मायावी राक्षसों का सफाया कर दिया। अयोध्या के लोग वहाँ आते रहते थे। इसलिए राम ने वहाँ से दूर जाने का निश्चय किया| उन्होंने वहाँ से दंडक वन जाने का निर्णय किया।अत्रि मुनि से विदा लेकर उन्होंने चित्रकूट छोड़ दिया। दंडक वन एक घना जंगल था|  यहाँ के तपस्वियों को राक्षस तंग करते रहते थे। मुनियों ने राम से मायावी राक्षसों से रक्षा करने के लिए कहा। वे दस वर्ष तक दंडक वन में रहे।

क्षरभंग मुनि के आश्रम में उन्होंने ऋषियों के कंकालों का ढेर देखा जिन्हें राक्षसों ने मार दिया था। सुतीक्ष्ण मुनि ने भी राम को राक्षसों के अत्याचारों की कथाएँ सुनाईं और अगस्त्य ऋषि से मिलने की सलाह दी। पंचवटी जाते हुए राम की भेंट जटायु से हुई। वह राजा दशरथ के थे और उन्होंने उनलोगों को मदद करने का वचन दिया|

पंचवटी में लक्ष्मण ने सुंदर कुटिया बनाई। राम-लक्ष्मण ऋषियों के आश्रमों पर आक्रमण करने वाले राक्षसों का संहार भी करते रहे। अब वहाँ तपस्वियों के लिए शांतिपूर्ण वातावरण था।

एक दिन लंका के राजा रावण की बहन शूर्पणखा वहाँ एक सुन्दर स्त्री का रूप धारण कर आयी और राम से बोली कि वह उनसे विवाह करना चाहती है। राम ने जब उससे कहा कि मेरा तो विवाह हो चुका है, तब वह लक्ष्मण के पास गई । लक्ष्मण ने उसे राम के पास भेज दिया। इस प्रकार दोनों के बीच वह भागती रही। अन्त में वह क्रोधित होकर सीता पर झपटी| लक्ष्मण ने तत्काल शूर्पणखा के नाक-कान काट लिए। खून से लथपथ शूर्पणखा रोती हुई अपने भाई खर और दूषण के पास पहुंची|

शूर्पणखा की दुर्दशा देखकर और उसकी इस दशा का कारण जानकर खर-दूषण क्रोध से भर गए। खर-दूषण ने पहले तो चौदह राक्षसों को राम से बदला लेने के लिए भेजा परंतु उनके मारे जाने पर स्वयं सेना लेकर राम से युद्ध करने पहुंचे और मारे गए। कुछ राक्षस जान बचाकर भाग गए। इनमें से अकंपन नामक राक्षस ने रावण को सारी घटना बताकर सीता का अपहरण करने की सलाह दी।

रावण सीता-हरण के लिए चला तो रास्ते में उसे मारीच मिला। मारीच ने रावण को ऐसा न करने की सलाह दी। रावण मारीच की बात मानकर चुपचाप लंका लौट गया। शूर्पणखा रोते हुए रावण के पास पहुँची और उसे अपना दुखड़ा सुनाया और राम-लक्ष्मण की वीरता की प्रशंसा करते हुए सीता की सुंदरता के बारे में बताया। उसने कहा कि वह तो सीता को उसके लिए लाना चाहती थी पर लक्ष्मण ने उसके नाक-कान काट दिए। उसने रावण को उनसे बदला लेने के लिए उकसाया।

इस बार रावण मारीच को लेकर पंचवटी गया। वहाँ जाकर मारीच मायावी सोने के हिरण रूप धारण कर राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता की कुटिया के पास घूमने लगा। रावण एक तपस्वी का वेश बनाकर एक पेड़ के पीछे छिप गया। सीता ने उस सोने के हिरण पर मुग्ध होकर राम को उसे पकड़ लाने के लिए कहा। राम-लक्ष्मण को वन में सोने के हिरण के होने पर संदेह था परंतु सीता के लिए राम सोने का हिरण लेने चले गए| उन्होंने लक्ष्मण को सीता की रक्षा करने का आदेश दिया|

भरत अपनी ननिहाल केकय राज्य में थे। वे अयोध्या में हो रही घटनाओं से अनजान थे| भरत ने सपने में देखा कि समुद्र सूख गया। चन्द्रमा धरती पर गिर पड़ा है। वृक्ष सूख गये हैं। एक राक्षसी उसके पिता को खींचकर ले जा रही है। वे रथ पर बैठे हैं। रथ गधे खींच रहे हैं। अयोध्या से घुड़सवार दूत वहाँ पहुँचे और उन्हें तुरंत अयोध्या चलने के लिए कहा। केकयराज ने भरत को सौ रथों और सेना के साथ विदा किया।

वे आठ दिन बाद अयोध्या पहुँचे तब उन्हें वहाँ शान्ति और उजाड़ दिखाई दी| उनकी माता कैकेयी ने बताया कि उनके पिता महाराज दशरथ का देहान्त हो गया है। भरत यह सुनकर विलाप करने लगे| भरत ने माता से राम के बारे में पूछा| कैकेयी ने बताया कि महाराज ने राम को चौदह वर्ष का वनवास और भरत को राजगद्दी दी है। भरत के पूछने पर कैकेयी ने उन्हें वरदान वाली बात बताई| भरत को क्रोध आ गया। वे माँ को भला-बुरा कहने लगे। उन्होंने कहा कि पिता को खोकर तथा भाई से बिछड़कर राज्य नहीं चाहिए। वहाँ अन्य मंत्रीगण और सभासद भी आ गए। भरत ने कहा कि वे राम के पासजायेंगें। उन्हें मना कर लाएँगें और प्रार्थना करेंगें कि वे गद्दी सँभालें|

भरत कौशल्या के महल की ओर चल पड़े। उन्होंने साड़ी बात माता कौशल्या को बताई| उन्होंने भरत को माफ़ कर दिया| सुबह तक शत्रुघ्न को भी यह पता चल गया था कि मंथरा ने ही कैकेयी के कान भरे थे। वे मंथरा को मार देना चाहते थे परंतु भरत ने उसे बचा लिया था। मुनि वशिष्ठ को अयोध्या का राजसिंहासन खाली रखना ठीक नहीं लग रहा था। उन्होंने भरत को राजकाज सँभालने के लिए कहा तो भरत ने वन जाकर राम को अयोध्या वापस लाने की बात कही।

भरत के साथ मुनि वशिष्ठ, सभी माताएँ, मंत्रीगण, सभासद, नगरवासी और अयोध्या की चतुरंगिणी सेना राम को अयोध्या वापस लाने के लिए चित्रकूट के लिए चल पड़ीं। भरत जब शृंगवेरपुर पहुंचे तो उनके साथ सेना को देखकर निषादराज गुह को लगा की भरत राम पर आक्रमण करने जा रहे परंतु सही स्थिति जानकर उन्होंने उनका स्वागत किया| उन लोगों ने नौकाओं द्वारा गंगा पार की| राम भारद्वाज आश्रम से दूर एक पहाड़ी पर पर्णकुटी बनाकर रह रहे थे। अयोध्यावासियों ने रात भारद्वाज आश्रम में व्यतीत की और सुबह राम के पास जाने के लिए प्रस्थान आरम्भ किया|

राम और सीता पर्णकुटी में थे। लक्ष्मण पहरा दे रहे थे। कोलाहल सभी ने सुना। लक्ष्मण ने देखा अयोध्या की विराट सेना चली आ रही है। उन्होंने जाकर राम को बताया और कहा कि शायद एकछत्र राज करने के लिए हमें भरत मार डालना चाहते हैं। राम ने लक्ष्मण को धैर्य रखने के लिए कहा| भरत सेना को पहाड़ी के नीचे रोककर शत्रुघ्न के साथ नंगे पाँव चलकर शिला पर बैठे हुए राम के चरणों में आकर गिर पड़े और कुछ नहीं बोले। राम-लक्ष्मण और सीता पहाड़ी से उतरकर नीचे नगरवासियों से मिले|

अगले दिन भरत ने राम से राजग्रहण करते हुए अयोध्या चलने का आग्रह किया। राम ने पिता की आज्ञा का उल्लंघन करने से इंकार कर दिया। राम के मना करने पर भरत ने कहा कि मैं आपके खड़ाऊँ अपने साथ लेकर जाऊँगा और चौदह वर्ष उसी की आज्ञा से राजकाज चलाऊँगा। भरत अयोध्या में कभी नहीं रुके। उन्होंने तपस्वी वस्त्र पहने और नंदीग्राम चले गए।
